Georges Tamer studied philosophy, sociology, theology and classical philology. He completed his doctorate in philosophy at the Freie University of Berlin in 2000 and his habilitation in Islamic Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2007. After working as an Arabic lecturer, a visiting professorship and a longer academic stay abroad, the Lebanese-born professor has held the Chair of Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg since October 2012. In 2016, he founded the research center Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses, which was replaced by the Bavarian Research Centre for Interreligious Discourses in October 2020. His research interests include Arab-Islamic intellectual history, Arabic philosophy and literature as well as interreligious discourses between Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Christian Lange studied Catholic theology, Latin studies, ancient history and the languages and cultures of the Christian Orient in Bamberg, Tübingen, Oxford and Salzburg. In 2001, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford with a thesis on “The Portrayal of Christ in the Syriac Commentary on the Diatessaron”. In 2011, the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Salzburg awarded him the Venia Legendi for the academic subject of Church History and Patrology with a thesis entitled “Mia Energeia. Investigations into the unification policy of Emperor Heraclius and Patriarch Sergius of Constantinople”. At the research center, Christian Lange deals with the religious connections between Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the Formative Phase of Late Antiquity as well as patristic literature and theology. Until April 2024, Christian Lange held the Chair of Ancient Church History and Patrology at the University of Würzburg. Since then, he has been Deputy Director of the BaFID.

Ramy Abdin studied Islamic Studies, Oriental Philology, and Philosophy as well as traditional Islamic disciplines in Vienna and Cairo. Since 2018, he has been working on his PhD at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg, where he is examining Ṭāhā ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān’s concept of philosophical creativity. Abdin previously worked as a research assistant at the FAU
Erlangen-Nürnberg. There he was involved in several projects, including the completion of the multi-volume collection ‘Handbook of Qurʾānic Hermeneutics’ and the coordination of a long-term project on the normativity of the Qurʾān. He is also currently a lecturer in Arabic at the FAU Language Centre. Since 2024, he has worked as a research assistant at BAFID, specializing in Islam. His research interests are wide-ranging. They include the interaction between Islam and modern technology, the interpretation of Islamic end-times prophecies, and the role of philosophy in the Islamic world.

Jan Gehm studied Protestant theology at Bochum, Wuppertal, and Münster, as well as Orthodox theology. During his studies, he undertook numerous excursions and research visits to the Middle East, in particular Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Armenia. After completing his studies, he worked on the European Research Council project “Rewriting Global Orthodoxy: Oriental Christians in Europe between 1970 and 2020” under the direction of Prof. Heleen Murre van den Berg at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He worked on Oriental Orthodox communities in Europe, in particular the Syrian Orthodox Church and community in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.
From May 2024 to March 2025, Jan Gehm held the Junior Professorship for Intercultural Theology and Religious Studies at the Department of Protestant Theology at the University of Hamburg. Since April 2025, Jan Gehm has been working as a research assistant at BAFID, specialising in Christianity. His research interests include religion and migration, the history and present of Christian communities in the Middle East, global Christianity with a special focus on Orthodoxy in the 21st century and migration churches in Europe.

Catharina Rachik, M.A.

Catharina Rachik studied Arabic and Islamic studies as well as modern and contemporary history and civil law in Münster and Cairo. From 2014 to 2021, she worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Islamic Theology at Münster University, where she was active in research, teaching and as a coordinator. Her research focuses on the Quran and Quranic exegesis, and she is particularly interested in historical-critical Quranic research and interreligious issues in the Quran. She is also intensively involved in the art and cultural history of Islam. She wrote her dissertation regarding Moses in the Qur’an with a special focus on comparisons with Jewish and Christian sources. As a research assistant at BaFID, she is responsible for coordinating and editing the KCID volumes.

Nathanael Riemer pursued his academic studies in Jewish Studies, German Studies, Philosophy, and History at Tübingen, Cologne, Jerusalem, Potsdam, and Tel Aviv. In 2009, he earned his doctorate from the University of Potsdam with a dissertation titled “Zwischen Tradition und Häresie. ‘Beer Sheva’ – an encyclopedia of Jewish knowledge in the early modern period,” which explored the dissemination of knowledge in early modern Judaism. From 2013 to 2020, he served as a Junior Professor of Jewish Studies, specializing in Interreligious Encounters at the University of Potsdam. During this time, he also held visiting professorships in Israel, China, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. He was a fellow at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. From 2021 to 2023, Nathanael taught German, history, and social and civic engagement.

At BaFID, Nathanael Riemer is a Jewish scholar who specializes in the study of Judaism. His research focuses on the material cultures of Judaism and Jewish literature, as well as popular cultures, including video games and religious comics, from a religious studies perspective.

Denise Scheuerer holds degrees in Islamic Studies, Political Science, and Economics, with a specialization in Modern Middle East studies from the universities of Erlangen and Damascus. After completing her studies, she worked for a member of the Bundestag and later served as an education coordinator for the municipality of Dietenhofen. Her experience also includes a role as a research assistant focused on the recognition of foreign professional qualifications, and managing an office within the City of Nuremberg. In addition to these roles, she has frequently worked as a freelance translator, interpreter, and moderator.

At BaFID, Denise is responsible for media and public relations, managing the research center’s media presence and overseeing all media appearances. In addition, the “Interreligious Calendar” project and the “kurz erklärt” video series fall within her area of ​​responsibility. Furthermore, she organizes lectures and supervises student assistants.

Nermin Al Aoua, B.A.

Nermin Al Aoua has been studying Middle Eastern Studies (MA) at Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg since October 2025. Prior to this, she studied Political Science and Arabic and Islamic Studies (BA) at Georg-August University of Göttingen. During her studies, she combined perspectives from political science and cultural studies with linguistic and regional expertise on the Arab world. Through a DAAD-funded semester abroad at the German-Jordanian University in Amman and a winter school at the University of Nizwa in Oman, she deepened her knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic and gained insights into the social and cultural dynamics of the region. Since November 2025, she has been working as a student assistant at the Chair of Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at FAU and at the Bavarian Research Institute for Interreligious Discourse (BaFID), where her responsibilities include social media management.
Her academic interests lie in the politics and society of the Middle East, particularly in issues of migration, international relations and intercultural dialogue.

Edanur Yarar, B.A.

Edanur Yarar completed her bachelor’s degree in political science and oriental studies at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where she focused particularly on issues relating to Islam, Middle East politics, and migration and refugee policy. A semester abroad at Cairo University’s Faculty of Economics and Political Science deepened her regional expertise and intercultural skills. She is currently continuing her studies with a master’s degree in political science at FAU.
She gained professional experience during her bachelor’s degree as a student assistant at the FAU Centre for Human Rights, where she worked in the research area of migration, refugees, and integration, and collaborated on the project ‘Health – Participation in the Care Sector.’ Since August 2025, she has also been supporting the Bavarian Research Centre for Interreligious Discourse in the area of social media and content creation.
Her interests revolve around the interplay of religion, culture, and politics, and the shaping of social negotiation processes. At BaFID, she would like to contribute to these interests and promote open intercultural and interreligious exchange.

Twinkle Yousuf Ahana, M.A.

Twinkle Yousuf Ahana completed her bachelor’s degree in public administration from Bangladesh University of Professionals, where she was actively involved in student politics and organized workers in the garment industry as a trade unionist. She completed her first master’s degree in labor policy at the Berlin School of Economics and Law with a scholarship from the Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD). She is currently completing her second master’s program in ‘Standards of Decision-Making Across Cultures’ at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at FAU. The KAAD scholarship introduced her to the importance of interfaith dialogue and understanding and sparked a deep interest in how religious values intersect with social and labor policies. At BaFID, she wants to contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding and cooperation between different religions and cultural backgrounds. As a student assistant, she is responsible for editing and proofreading publications and following up on the publication process, as well as website and social media management.
