3. The Concept of Morality in Islam (Prof. Dr. Mutaz Al-Khatib, Hamad Bin Khalifa University)

The video series “Emotion and Morality” explores the ethical dimension of human emotions. Experts analyze the concept of “prescribed emotions” in Judaism, the role of passions in Christian theology, and Islamic debates on virtues such as patience, repentance, and spiritual joy.

The traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam place great emphasis on the role of emotions. The key concepts of love and fear, hope and grief, joy and anger occupy a prominent place in their sacred texts, and it can be argued that religions function practically through the medium of emotion. This raises the question of what exactly is meant by the term ‘emotions’. The conceptualisation of emotions within the context of these respective religions has undergone significant shifts over the course of their histories. Within mystical traditions in particular, the discussion of emotions has intensified, as these were closely linked to the divine experience and closeness to the divine. This volume examines the conceptualisation of emotions in the three religions and their various traditions, with a focus on identifying commonalities and differences between them.
