Man and Woman – Always Unambiguous?

Gender Concepts in Antiquity and Their Interpretations

What does it mean to be created "in the image of God" (Gen 1:27) as a human being? And does this truly refer strictly to "man and woman"? Even in antiquity, this question received a variety of answers: some interpretations viewed humanity as two-gendered, while others conceived it as a single unit or even as an androgyne being.

This lecture by Prof. Dr. Christian Lange from the Bavarian Research Center for Interreligious Discourse (BaFID) provides an accessible overview of these early historical interpretations, demonstrating the remarkable diversity of thought surrounding gender even in ancient times. It highlights how current debates on gender roles and identity are rooted in a long history.
