He completed his doctorate in philosophy at the Freie University of Berlin in 2000 and his habilitation in Islamic Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2007. After working as an Arabic lecturer, a visiting professorship and a longer academic stay abroad, the Lebanese-born professor has held the Chair of Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg since October 2012. In 2016, he founded the research center Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses, which was replaced by the Bavarian Research Centre for Interreligious Discourses in October 2020. In 2001, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford with a thesis on \u201cThe Portrayal of Christ in the Syriac Commentary on the Diatessaron\u201d. In 2011, the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Salzburg awarded him the Venia Legendi for the academic subject of Church History and Patrology with a thesis entitled \u201cMia Energeia. Investigations into the unification policy of Emperor Heraclius and Patriarch Sergius of Constantinople\u201d. At the research center, Christian Lange deals with the religious connections between Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the Formative Phase of Late Antiquity as well as patristic literature and theology. Until April 2024, Christian Lange held the Chair of Ancient Church History and Patrology at the University of W\u00fcrzburg. Since 2018, he has been working on his PhD at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-N\u00fcrnberg, where he is examining \u1e6c\u0101h\u0101 \u02bfAbd ar-Ra\u1e25m\u0101n&#8217;s concept of philosophical creativity. Abdin previously worked as a research assistant at the FAU<br \/>\nErlangen-N\u00fcrnberg. There he was involved in several projects, including the completion of the multi-volume collection &#8216;Handbook of Qur\u02be\u0101nic Hermeneutics&#8217; and the coordination of a long-term project on the normativity of the Qur\u02be\u0101n. He is also currently a lecturer in Arabic at the FAU Language Centre. Since 2024, he has worked as a research assistant at BAFID, specializing in Islam. His research interests are wide-ranging. During his studies, he undertook numerous excursions and research visits to the Middle East, in particular Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Armenia. After completing his studies, he worked on the European Research Council project \u201cRewriting Global Orthodoxy: Oriental Christians in Europe between 1970 and 2020\u201d under the direction of Prof. Heleen Murre van den Berg at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He worked on Oriental Orthodox communities in Europe, in particular the Syrian Orthodox Church and community in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.<br \/>\nFrom May 2024 to March 2025, Jan Gehm held the Junior Professorship for Intercultural Theology and Religious Studies at the Department of Protestant Theology at the University of Hamburg. Since April 2025, Jan Gehm has been working as a research assistant at BAFID, specialising in Christianity. Her research focuses on the Quran and Quranic exegesis, and she is particularly interested in historical-critical Quranic research and interreligious issues in the Quran. In 2009, he earned his doctorate from the University of Potsdam with a dissertation titled &#8220;Zwischen Tradition und H\u00e4resie. \u2018Beer Sheva\u2019 &#8211; an encyclopedia of Jewish knowledge in the early modern period,&#8221; which explored the dissemination of knowledge in early modern Judaism. From 2013 to 2020, he served as a Junior Professor of Jewish Studies, specializing in Interreligious Encounters at the University of Potsdam. During this time, he also held visiting professorships in Israel, China, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. He was a fellow at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. From 2021 to 2023, Nathanael taught German, history, and social and civic engagement.<\/p>\n<p>At BaFID, Nathanael Riemer is a Jewish scholar who specializes in the study of Judaism. After completing her studies, she worked for a member of the Bundestag and later served as an education coordinator for the municipality of Dietenhofen. Her experience also includes a role as a research assistant focused on the recognition of foreign professional qualifications, and managing an office within the City of Nuremberg. In addition to these roles, she has frequently worked as a freelance translator, interpreter, and moderator.<\/p>\n<p>At BaFID, Denise is responsible for media and public relations, managing the research center\u2019s media presence and overseeing all media appearances. In addition, the &#8220;Interreligious Calendar&#8221; project and the &#8220;kurz erkl\u00e4rt&#8221; video series fall within her area of \u200b\u200bresponsibility. Prior to this, she studied Political Science and Arabic and Islamic Studies (BA) at Georg-August University of G\u00f6ttingen. During her studies, she combined perspectives from political science and cultural studies with linguistic and regional expertise on the Arab world. Through a DAAD-funded semester abroad at the German-Jordanian University in Amman and a winter school at the University of Nizwa in Oman, she deepened her knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic and gained insights into the social and cultural dynamics of the region. A semester abroad at Cairo University&#8217;s Faculty of Economics and Political Science deepened her regional expertise and intercultural skills. She is currently continuing her studies with a master&#8217;s degree in political science at FAU.<br \/>\nShe gained professional experience during her bachelor&#8217;s degree as a student assistant at the FAU Centre for Human Rights, where she worked in the research area of migration, refugees, and integration, and collaborated on the project \u2018Health \u2013 Participation in the Care Sector.\u2019 Since August 2025, she has also been supporting the Bavarian Research Centre for Interreligious Discourse in the area of social media and content creation.<br \/>\nHer interests revolve around the interplay of religion, culture, and politics, and the shaping of social negotiation processes. She completed her first master&#8217;s degree in labor policy at the Berlin School of Economics and Law with a scholarship from the Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD). She is currently completing her second master&#8217;s program in \u2018Standards of Decision-Making Across Cultures\u2019 at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at FAU. The KAAD scholarship introduced her to the importance of interfaith dialogue and understanding and sparked a deep interest in how religious values intersect with social and labor policies. At BaFID, she wants to contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding and cooperation between different religions and cultural backgrounds.
