What is the meaning of life in the context of religious belief systems? A new anthology in the “Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses” (KCID) series addresses this fundamental question. Edited by Ramy Abdin and Georges Tamer of FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, the volume examines the concept of “life” from the perspectives of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
The question of the nature of life is as old as humanity itself. Yet while the natural sciences analyse biological processes and classical philosophy seeks logical definitions, the monotheistic world religions offer a far more multifaceted approach.
A holistic view of life
In the traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the concept of “life” goes far beyond purely biological models of explanation. The essays in this volume demonstrate how these three religions converge on an understanding that interconnects various dimensions:
- Biological Foundations: Life as a Physical Gift and Miracle.
- Ethical responsibility: Shaping one’s life according to moral standards.
- Cosmological Embedding: The Place of Humanity in a Divine Plan of Salvation.
A central element in monotheistic thought is the concept of the soul. It serves as an integral link, without which a comprehensive understanding of “life” in these traditions would not be possible.
Tradition in Dialogue with Modernity
The volume covers a wide range of topics, from classical, traditional perspectives to the challenges of the present day. Particularly fascinating is the tension between modern scientific findings and theological concepts. How can belief in creation be reconciled with modern biology? Where do theology and science complement each other, and where do points of friction arise?
About the Editors
The volume is edited by Ramy Abdin and Prof. Dr. Georges Tamer of the Chair of Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. Both contribute their expertise in interreligious dialogue to make fundamental concepts of our existence accessible to a broad academic audience.
With this volume, BaFID continues its work of systematically comparing key concepts of the three monotheistic religions, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding between cultures.
